As a High School Health and PE teacher, I will engage students to critically think about the content and develop greater understanding. I will achieve this through an energetic attitude, being approachable for the students, and while remaining calm and understanding to the students throughout their learning process. I will implement a positive learning environment, get to know the students and their parents, continually provide positive motivation to succeed, and strive to always improve both students and myself. Creating a better, more well-educated community is the goal.
The primary goal should be to provide the students with the information and the tools to develop enduring understanding in the course content. In order for this to happen the classroom environment must be relaxed, inspiring, and energetic. Rather than using teacher-centered approaches, class will be conducted using more of a student-centered method with students letting them help teach one another. Since students learn in different ways, the material must be presented in a way that builds on prior common knowledge of all students. The students will think critically about history and how it led us to where we are today, and how events will impact them in the future. I will connect with the students establishing a rapport to see what parts of class they find beneficial or need adjusting.
Part of teaching is finding out what works and what doesn’t. As an educator an important component is being able to understand the students. Finding out what approaches, methods, and examples clicked with the students and which ones didn’t will vastly help future classes. No two students are the same, however, if something specific helps out a few students, it most likely will help out others too. Promoting a proper learning environment with the right teaching style will help maximize the potential for student capabilities to think critically and gain knowledge. One of the best ways I feel to do this is to not lecture the answers at the students and have them regurgitate. Rather, presenting the students with a problem and assist them in arriving at the solution. I feel this will help the students store information into long-term memory so they can use the skills learned now in the future. Providing the students with the proper tools and cues to find the information and answers themselves will help them learn more effectively and develop an enduring understanding of the material.
In the classroom, I will create a learning environment that is in the best interest of the students. I will motivate them to excel and achieve in the classroom and in life. Sometimes students need the teacher to assist them to delve into uncharted territory that allows them to acquire new knowledge and information. Students get motivated in different ways, and I will find ways to connect the material to their own previous knowledge so that the students can build onto what they know with new ideas. The teacher must lead by example, and enthusiasm is contagious. Everyday I will be excited about inspiring all students to be creative and explore new ideas and possibilities.
I will constantly strive to improve my teaching techniques, while also inspiring the students to look inside themselves and see how they can improve how they plan, monitor, and evaluate their own learning. While teaching, it is imperative to continually develop new skills, and consistently fine tune and improve upon the current methods used. Interacting with other teachers, self-evaluation, and student responses to my teaching will allow me to consistently grow and develop as a professional teacher.
